My name is Sam Arnold and I am an Artist and Founder of Sam Lynn Studio. I work primarily with acrylic paints, watercolor and mixed media in an abstract, almost cartoon-like, style. I am currently exploring visual imagery that depicts what it is like for me to live with a vast number of autoimmune diseases that I have been diagnosed with and the effect my illness has on my loved ones. The bright colored, bold characters seen in my works use a variety of lines to show movement and emotion in their expressions.
In my work, I try to juxtapose bright, cheerful characters with expressions of deeper pain and emotion that they are attempting to conceal from the audience. This is much like the struggle faced by myself and loved ones when dealing with the everyday pains and stresses caused by chronic illnesses.
You can see this when looking at Flower Child, 2017. A flower, which is generally a beautiful object to look upon, has a gaze of insanity in its eyes, and with a “cute” but menacing red pointed collar the viewer may be left feeling unsettled.
