ABOUT THE ARTIST
Sam Arnold largely works with acrylic paints, watercolor and mixed media in an abstract, almost cartoon-like, style. She is currently exploring visual imagery that depicts what it is like for her and her loved ones to live with a vast number of autoimmune diseases that she has been diagnosed with. The bright colored, bold characters seen in her works use a variety of lines to show movement and emotion in their expressions.
Flower Child, 2017.
You can see this when looking at Flower Child, 2017. A flower, which is generally a beautiful object to look upon, has a gaze of insanity in its eyes, and with a “cute” but menacing red pointed color the viewer may be left feeling unsettled. It is an interesting juxtaposition to see characters that at first glance are bright and cheerful, have deeper pain and emotion that they are attempting to conceal from the audience. This is much like the struggle the artist and her loved ones face in attempt to deal with the everyday pain and stress of dealing with chronic illness.
